Knee pain

Knee pain or knee injuries are extremely common and there are many causes. The knee needs to function properly in order to provide flexible mobility, whilst bearing considerable weight.

Whilst simply walking down the street, our knees bear three to five times our body weight. Many jobs, sports and recreational activities can impact your knees.

Ageing and associated diseases such as osteoporosis or arthritis can also increase the chances of knee problems. Sudden (acute) injuries may be caused by a direct blow to the knee or from abnormal twisting, bending or falling on the knee.

Overuse injuries occur due to repetitive activities and repeated or prolonged pressure on the knee. Activities such as stair climbing, jogging or jumping may stress joints and other tissues, therefore leading to irritation and inflammation. The risk of injury is, of course, much higher if any of these activities are performed with incorrect positioning of the knee.

Professional diagnosis of the cause of your knee pain means appropriate treatment can be directed at the cause. Your physiotherapist will discuss the injury with you and estimate the time it will take to recover. If necessary, you will be guided regarding correct knee positioning for particular activities.

Physiotherapy treatment for patients with knee issues is vital to hasten the healing process, ensure an optimal outcome and reduce the likelihood of injury recurrence. Once the pain is reduced, we can increase the rehab strength program to assist the patient back to their chosen sporting activity and the activities of daily living.
